What Does Cigna Cover?

Hundreds of millions of Americans have health coverage with Cigna [1]. However, many of those people are confused about what exactly their insurance plans cover when it comes to drug and alcohol treatment. Since there is still a stigma associated with drug use across the U.S., people still feel ashamed to seek help and are under the impression that insurance does not cover drug and alcohol rehabilitation, when the truth is, most insurance plans do offer coverage for rehab. Of course, with most forms of health care, Cigna will cover a portion of the drug and alcohol treatment, leaving the patient to cover the rest out-of-pocket.

Let’s take a look at what Cigna in-network providers cover at Olympus Recovery:

Outpatient Addiction Recovery Treatment

Similar to inpatient addiction recovery treatment, Cigna Health insurance covers at least some of the costs associated with outpatient addiction recovery treatment.

Cigna’s Open Access Plans (OAP) allow patients to choose their health care providers and do not require referrals for patients to see specialists. Some OAP plans have deductibles that must be met, and others do not [3].

If you’re on an OAP plan without a deductible, you will only be responsible for paying your co-pay (usually $50) each time you attend treatment.

Cigna’s OAPs have a maximum out-of-pocket limit of $2,000, which is generally only reached if the patient attends outpatient care for more than 40 days or if they incur costs for other services.

The amount of coverage you will receive for care with in-network providers for Cigna varies widely and depends on a number of factors, including:

  • Where you live
  • Whether the facility is in- or out-of-network
  • How long you’re staying at the facility or attending outpatient treatment
  • Your health insurance plan level
  • Level of treatment needed
  • Type of program
  • Specific services required

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

Partial Hospitalization Programs, or PHP, let patients live at home while attending treatment during the day. This treatment is best for people requiring extensive treatment but who don’t quite need 24/7 monitoring. This is an excellent step after residential treatment and before intensive outpatient treatment.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

Intensive Outpatient Treatment, or IOP, generally involves 10-20 hours of counseling and/or group therapy a few times per week for anywhere from one to three months. This is a good option for people who:

  • Want to continue working or going to school while receiving treatment.
  • Want to stay close to their loved ones.
  • Have a home life that is conducive to sobriety.
  • Cannot afford or cannot find in-network drug recovery for inpatient care.

How to Check Your Cigna Rehab Coverage and Insurance Benefits

If you’re looking for in-network providers for Cigna, you must first check your insurance benefits so you can get a full understanding of what Cigna will pay for and what you’ll be expected to cover.

Cigna offers several categories of health insurance based on the patient’s

  • State
  • Employer
  • Qualification for state/federally funded health care, such as Medicaid, Medicare, and the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

The simplest way to check your coverage is to call Cigna and have a representative explain your benefits and coverage level to you. You can also contact Cigna in-network providers, who are usually happy to contact Cigna on your behalf and get back to you with an explanation of your benefits.
